The traditional music of the area uses mainly the pan pipes (a row of bamboo tubes lashed together and blown over like a milk bottle), the flute, the Charango (a tiny 8 stringed guitar made out of an armadillo shell), and a normal guitar and drum. I met them performing out on the street to tourists with their flute player. They played amazingly well and so I asked them to do a session. We only had less than 24 hours because I was due to leave Cusco the following day so I joined them at the "Inka Grill" restaurant where they were playing that evening and set up my gear. You don't need to listen to carefully to hear the sound of the diners chatting over their food in the background.

Aureliano and Santos, two very friendly and decent chaps, seemed to be very happy when I gave them the CD of these recordings. It turned out that Aureliano is also a sound engineer. It was fantastic to meet a Peruvian who did the same job as me. "Entry of Guy" was played over a large PA system as a 25 foot figure of Guy Fawkes (strapped to a golf buggy) made its way through the crowd of over 15,000 people and approached the enormous wooden model of the houses of parliament designed and built by the sculptor Pete Mountain. Over a period of about 5 months we recorded and mixed nine songs together. Unfortunately though, Tom left me in no doubt about the fact that he didn't really like what I had done with his songs. This came as a big disappointment, especially as I had put so much work into making them.

I have tried several times, unsuccessfully, to get back in touch to ask Tom whether he minds me putting his music on this web site. Nevertheless because I really like these songs, especially "War fights war", "I lost my stance" and "Forget it All", I have decided to make them available to be listened to.

Arguably his best song "Yao!" takes its name from the call made by the lone snorkelling fisherman to the waiting fisherman on the shore when he spots a shoal of expensive-looking fish swimming within the perimeter of the net. They immediately drop their dominoes and haul in the huge net that can contain over 2000 fish.

These songs, most of which are about the people of Taganga and their day-to-day living, were recorded in-between tropical rain showers in the local houses of Taganga using just an ageing laptop and a pair of mics with some sticky tape. They turned out quite well though.

Some of these are written for a specific purpose such as a fireshow soundtrack. Some tracks work as they are without vocals while others are plainly missing a melodic element deliberately left out to provide space for a voice. "Pretty up the House" accompanied a beautifully-spectacular illumination of the bonfire build prior to "the finale" when we re-wrote history by actually "burning down the house!" Over a period of about 5 months we recorded and mixed nine songs together.
